The environmental studies department, one of the most diverse such departments in any undergraduate college, offers two types of courses: core courses taught by the environmental studies faculty, and courses in other departments of the University.
The Urban Studies Program is designed as a multidisciplinary concentration in the study of cities and urbanization. Students examine the development of cities and their surrounding regions; the role of cities in the history of civilization; the social problems of urban life; the design of the built environment; and past and present efforts at planning for the future of urban societies.
Environmental Studies at Vassar is a fully multidisciplinary program that involves the natural and social sciences as well as the arts and humanities. It explores the relationships between people and the totality of their environments - natural, built, and social.
As the human population grows, understanding the earth and its resources becomes progressively more important for both future policy makers and ordinary citizens. Because the human need to understand the earth is so pervasive, we provide our students with a broad and solid minimal set of required courses plus room to explore more specialized topics with well-chosen electives within and outside the department.
The Field of Atmospheric Science offers Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. Students may apply for admission to the M.S., M.S./ Ph.D., or Ph.D. programs. Students at the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) level may apply for direct admission to the Ph.D. program only if they have had exceptional preparation or professional experience in their areas of interest.
The Earth Science Education (7–12) Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program leads to eligibility for New York State initial certification to teach both earth science and general science in grades 7–12.
This program is designed for in-service teachers or those seeking science teaching certification. The earth science education program permits graduate work in any of the sciences or mathematics, in addition to required science education coursework.
